Young learners begin school with excitement and, often, anxiety.

What if children knew early on in life that they already have the tools to learn anything—even things that don’t seem to come naturally to them at first?

Sometimes it can feel like children have no motivation to learn. They may resist doing schoolwork or seem apathetic about academic learning. Often, this is a result of a fixed mindset—they believe they were just born smart, average or dumb, and that there is nothing they can do to change it. The secret to unlocking their unlimited potential is giving them an understanding of how the brain works so they can use it to their advantage.

What happens when kids learn about their brain?

  • Their self-esteem increases.

  • They become more resilient.

  • They are not afraid to fail.

  • They take on new challenges.

  • They learn autonomously.

  • Their love for learning improves considerably.

A message from the program creator

My journey into the neuroscience of learning started almost two decades ago. Still, the most vivid moment I can remember was explaining to my son, Vlad, how intelligence builds through learning and the creation of new neuropathways in the brain. He was only four years old when we started using a colourful brain plasticity poster. Later, we had the opportunity to visit a research lab where we wore stretchy caps with more than a hundred small, spongy sensors on our heads. We saw in real-time how the sensors measured our naturally occurring brain waves, which fluctuated as we played educational games or engaged in guided meditation.

When children understand how their brains transform as they learn new things, the whole idea of learning in school changes profoundly for them

Neuroscience may seem like an advanced subject of study, perhaps one best reserved for college, but two researchers from Temple University in Philadelphia suggest that it should be taught earlier. Much earlier. As in, first grade earlier!

Psychologists Peter Marshall and Christina Comalli began their research by surveying children aged 4 to 13 to discover what children already knew about the brain. They learned that while parents and teachers often talk to young children about the parts of the body and how they work, they rarely mention the body’s most important organ: the brain.

Secondly, children can’t observe their own brains, so they are left to guess about what’s going on inside their heads. And finally, most children aren’t formally taught much about the brain until at least secondary school. Marshall and Comalli believe that education about the brain and its workings can and should begin much sooner.

In a well-known body of research, Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck demonstrated that teaching students about how their brains work—mainly that the brain is plastic and can develop new capacities with effort and practice—makes a big difference in how constructively children deal with mistakes and setbacks, and how motivated they are to persist until they achieve mastery.

The How People Learn School Programme is a blended learning programme

It includes both online and offline lessons designed to make you the school “neuroscientist” and their guide!

  • 15 Science Stories

Through fifteen science stories, the programme unravels how the human brain learns and how to use this to help children become smarter, better and happier learners.

  • 60 Minutes of Video Classes

You can choose to teach these lessons via distance learning, blended learning or a hybrid of both. The videos are engaging, funny and child-friendly.

  • 3 Hours of Online Quiz Lessons

These interactive online quizzes will allow each individual learner to test their knowledge throughout the course. Doing this immediately after learning a new concept will help improve their ability to recall the information at a later time.

  • 30 + Practical Activities

Each scientific story has been paired with a set of practical “Try This” sections, which include a wide range of fun learning activities that can be used in a classroom setting or remotely.

  • You can use these games as tools for the reflective thinking routines in different ways depending on the lesson, the ages of the children and the goals for learning.

  • Bonus Section

The programme also includes a bonus section: two printable Personal Journals filled with daily brain teasers for children and activities anchored in sustainability and character development.

Our experienced learning designers have developed a suite of useful resources

It includes tools for both teachers and children that will help them to learn, teach and build new learning habits in school and beyond.

The School Kit includes tools that help both teachers and children to learn, teach and build new learning habits in school and beyond. The resources can be downloaded and printed out so that you always have them available. To help you teach this curriculum, you’ll receive the ultimate Facilitator Guide, which is packed full of ideas, inspiration and practical resources. Additionally, Olimpia Mesa will personally connect with you online for a 90-minute webinar to welcome you and make sure you are fully equipped.

We have prepared exciting and engaging materials for children

The resources in the TRY THIS sections can be downloaded and printed out so that children always have them available for practice.

Parents, teachers and children around the world agree: How People Learn is the best thing you can do for your child to help them prepare for the future. Check out what they have to say below.

How People Learn becomes a gateway - bridging new insights with practical application, all in a fun, engaging way

Alis Anagnostakis - Coach, Australia

Children will discover activities that challenge them to go outside the program and actually build the concepts they are reading about. Learning challenges will allow them to take the lessons from the book back into their homes and classrooms and notice how their life changes as they experience learning differently. Thus How People Learn becomes a gateway - bridging new insights with practical application, all in a fun, engaging way.

Excellent guide to help children use their brains more effectively. Very clever and thought-provoking.

Dr. Martin Fitzgerald - Lecturer in education, Irlanda

Well done on an excellent guide to help children use their brains more effectively and also giving parents and teachers a way of working and supporting children’s learning. I loved the layout and the visuals. I thought the series of exercises and challenges were very age-appropriate and accessible. The way it ends with the brain-challenges is great and gives children and real programme to follow and challenging questions at every stage. Well done on a very clever and thought-provoking piece of work!

How People Learn takes us on an adventure to uncover the secrets of learning

David Willows - Director of Admissions, Belgium

How People Learn takes us on an adventure to uncover the secrets of learning. In a manner that is accessible to both children and adults alike, it invites us to explore the magnificent human brain and how to ensure it works effectively…What I like most of all is the accessibility to complex information - a simplicity that is very powerful.

How People Learn teaches, engages, and interacts with its audiences- encouraging them to embark on a journey through their own brains that will constantly fascinate and intrigue.

You May Have A Few Questions…

  • What ages are the How People Learn Online Course and additional products geared towards?

The online curriculum was created with kids aged 9-12 in mind. Children are expected to be able to read and navigate a child-friendly online platform.

  • Why is this considered a Blended Learning Curriculum?

Each video lesson is available for online completion and is indicated with a video icon. Learners can use a computer, laptop or tablet to view these videos, read the associated science stories, and complete the embedded online quizzes. Learners may watch, read and self-assess multiple times to complete these activities. The lessons are designed to be flexible in their implementation and include the following online activities: (1) Access to How People Learn curriculum videos. (2) Access to How People Learn book chapters. (2) Access to How People Learn embedded online quizzes for each individual user of the platform. In addition to the online resources, teachers can use the downloadable practice materials to organise classroom activities. All the resources necessary for effective learning strategies, games and active learning options are available in the Facilitator Guide of the How People Learn Blended Learning Programme. Teachers are free to alter the plan, change the order, substitute activities or repeat activities as desired.

  • What is included in the School/Classsroom Kit?

The School Kit includes tools that help both teachers and children to learn, teach and build new learning habits in school and beyond. The resources can be downloaded and printed out so that you always have them available. To help you teach this curriculum, you’ll receive the ultimate Facilitator Guide, which is packed full of ideas, inspiration and practical resources.
